Wake, Durham County School Closings
Wake County Public School System schools will be closed on Tuesday, 12/09/2025 due to winter storm. Athletic and extracurricular events on Tuesday are canceled on 9 December 2025. Essential personnel are asked to report to work as directed by their supervisor at Durham public schools. Central North Carolina woke up to widespread school closings on Monday and Tuesday too as both Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) and Durham Public Schools (DPS) announced there would be no classes due to a fast-moving winter storm.
The mix of early-morning snow, freezing temperatures, and the growing threat of black ice made travel too risky for buses, staff, and families across the region. Black ice forms when wet roads refreeze into a thin, nearly invisible sheet of ice — and officials warned that the rapid drop in temperature overnight created ideal conditions for slippery, unsafe roads.

About 160,000 students are studying in the Wake County Schools. The WCPSS is the largest school district in North Carolina with 200 plus schools which includes all Elementary, Middle, High Schools. WCPSS schools were spread in Apex, Raleigh, Cary, Wendell, Fuquay-Varina, Garner, Wake Forest, Holy Springs, Knightdale, Rolesville, Morrisville cities. There are 57 schools in Durham Public Schools.
Both districts emphasized that safety was the top priority. With many residential roads untouched by plows and bridges freezing first, the risk of accidents during the morning commute was considered too high. All after-school programs, extracurricular activities, and athletic events were canceled as well. School administrators noted that winter storms like this, though not frequent in North Carolina, require extra caution because the area lacks the heavy snow-clearing infrastructure found in northern states.
Parents across Wake and Durham supported the decision, saying that even a small amount of snow and ice can quickly create hazardous travel conditions. As temperatures remain below freezing, districts will continue monitoring weather updates before deciding on delays or closures for the following day.
